Couples Session Prep Guide
So you booked your session. Now what?
I am excited to capture you and your loved one. Custom photography is unique because it not only captures what you look like at a certain point in time, it captures who you are. I aim to capture honest photos of you and your partner. The goal is not to get stiff and posed shots with everyone looking at the camera, but to capture the true essence of you together. I take a documentary approach to photography and use my understanding of my equipment and natural light to create images that will become works of art that you can hang in your home and pass down for generations. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your session with me.
Location: Together, we will decide on the best location for your photos. We can shoot in your home as long as your home has adequate natural light. I have many locations that I love to shoot at regularly but I am always open to new locations as well. You should choose a location that fits your style and personality. I can help you along with this decision.
Time: If we are shooting in your home, I prefer late morning, because that is when homes are usually lit up the best. If we are shooting outdoors we will shoot either in the morning or in the evening. The light is typically too harsh midday so shooting one hour before sunset provides gorgeous light and atmosphere. The images in my portfolio look the way they do largely because of my use of light and the time of day your session takes place has a huge impact.
Length Of Session: The good news is, I am pretty fast! My couple’s portrait sessions rarely last more than 45 minutes depending on locations. Don't worry, I can easily get a diverse and adequate gallery at that time.
Props: I do not use props during my sessions, however, if you have something in mind please let me know.
What to Bring to the Session: Please leave as many belongings behind as possible. We are often walking around to capture different backdrops and I shoot along the way. Chances are we won’t be far from your car so if you need anything we can take a break.
Please arrive on time or be ready to start on time: Remember, your session is scheduled according to light. It is important that we start on time. Please plan for traffic or parking constraints. It's best to arrive early.
Is there a Ring? If a ring is involved, have it cleaned before your shoot! Click here for advice on how to clean your ring. Keep in mind that lotion will dull it back up in seconds so apply every before you put on your ring.
Wardrobe: Start with the most fashion-conscious partner and let the rest follow. I recommend neutral colors with a mixture of solids, textures, and patterns in your color pallet. I do not recommend matching but rather coordinating. Avoid graphics, neon, and solid black clothing. What is most important is that you feel beautiful and comfortable!
Personal Styling: The incredible Katie Collins has styled them all! She is ready to help with any look from the runway to the mountain top. Contact her directly through her website here. Just looking for a little inspiration? Click here for styling help styling code SAPHOTO
Weather: Photographers can perform magic but what we can’t do is control the weather. Please understand that the San Francisco Bay Area weather is volatile and dress accordingly. Dressing in layers is best!
I can't wait to capture you and your partner! Do not hesitate to ask questions!
